Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) at St Camillus Hospital in Limerick are to start a work to rule this morning.

The action, which is underway from 8am, comes seven months after nurses told the HSE that the clinical care of patients had being compromised by ongoing staff shortages.

Currently there are around 15 vacant nursing posts at the hospital.

The union says it has been engaged with the HSE since November as part of efforts to fast-track recruitment, but the positions remain unfilled.

The INMO also says that calls to curtail admissions have been rejected.

INMO spokesperson Mary Fogarty says the care of patients has been impacted as a result of the ongoing staff shortages.

She says members have described risks including "not having adequate time to food patients or administer medication", as well as risks in not meeting HIQA and nursing standards.

"It is a poor reflection of our health service providers that nurses are driven to take industrial action to protect vulnerable residents in the care of the HSE," Ms Fogarty adds.
