Investigations are underway after what appears to be human waste was found in drinks cans at a Coca Cola factory in Northern Ireland.

The PSNI were called to the premises in Lisburn, County Antrim last week where the suspected contaminated tins were found.

The soft drinks company says the production was immediately seized and that there is no evidence they've reached the public.

It's believed the cans were transported from Germany to the Coca Cola factory in Antrim. 

A spokeswoman for Coca Cola said the company "take the safety and quality" of their products "extremely seriously".

"We are treating this matter extremely seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation in co-operation with the PSNI.

Commenting on the situation, The Foods Standards Agency of Northern Ireland said it was aware of a "physical contamination incident".

A spokeswoman for the FSA said "There is no evidence to suggest that any affected product has reached the market."

"The incident is subject to an investigation by the PSNI and the environmental health unit of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council."
