A high-speed 'Hyperloop' transport system could be built in Moscow following an agreement between US and Russian companies.

The Hyperloop is the brainchild of Elon Musk: the co-founder of PayPal who has spent his recent years developing both electric car company called Tesla Motors and space technology group SpaceX.

Passengers would be transported at speeds of over 1,200 km per hour (between three and four times the maximum operating speed of a Japanese bullet train) inside elevated ‘tubes’ or pods.

It has also been suggested that larger pods could be developed to transport cars and heavier goods as well as the passengers.

Hyperloop One is one of several companies that has been established with the intention to work on the 'open source' transport technology, alongside the likes of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies.

It was announced today that Hyperloop One and Russian investment firm the Summa Group have agreed to explore the possibility of a Hyperloop system for Moscow. The deal is reported to have been signed at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

In a statement - quoted by VentureBeat - Ziyavudin Magomedov, owner of the Summa Group, said: “Hyperloop can improve life dramatically for the 16 million people in the greater Moscow area, cutting their commute to a fraction of what it is today.

"Our longer term vision is to work with Russia to implement a transformative new Silk Road: a cargo Hyperloop that whisks freight containers from China to Europe in a day," he added.

Co-founder of Hyperloop One, Shervin Pishevar, indicated earlier this month that Vladimir Putin said that "Hyperloop will fundamentally change the global economy".

Earlier this year, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies announced that it had reached an agreement with the Slovakian government to link the country with Austria and Hungary via Hyperloop. The company is currently developing a prototype track in Quay Valley, California.

SpaceX last year announced an 'open competition' to design and build the best Hyperloop pod, with particpants set to test their creations later this year on a special test track.

Hyperloop One last month released video of an open-air test of their propulsion system:
