HelloVote: New service allows those in the US to register to vote by text

The chatbot tool allows voters to register via text or Facebook Messenger in less than a minute

Unless you've been under a rock for the past few months, you'll be aware of the fact that the US Presidential election will take place in November. HelloVote is seeking to make it easier than ever before for US citizens to register for vote.

HelloVote is a chatbot-based tool that allows voters to register over text message or Facebook Messenger in under one minute. The initiative is very much targeting millennial and minority voters. So far it has the backing of MTV, Rock The Vote, SEIU California, and Twilio, a San Francisco-based cloud communications company.

The nonprofit's goal is "to turn talkers into voters," according to HelloVote co-founder Tiffiniy Cheng.

"The reality is that today we work, play and shop on our phones," she continued. "HelloVote is a revolution in democracy making and brings voter registration out of the dark ages and into the current cycle, hopefully engaging communities and mobilizing underrepresented voters in the process."

HelloVote is hoping to capitalise on National Voter Registration Day, which takes place on September 27.
