Tiger-style taxi queues have been forming in urban centres around the country over the last two weekends as the Christmas season gets into full swing.

Taxi-booking app Hailo has revealed that last weekend was its busiest-ever weekend in Ireland and that the company is expecting the rest of the holiday season to be equally busy.

The demand for taxis was double that of a normal weekend - and higher than New Year's Eve last year.

Hailo also recorded its highest-ever number of drivers on the road dealing with the spike in demand.

The company has advised that you plan ahead and book ahead to avoid delays over Christmas and New Years.

Halio has gained a strong foothold in the Irish market - it passed the 10 million journey milestone in Ireland during the first week of this month.

This dominant position is likely to come under pressure in the coming year as Uber expands its presence in the Irish market.

It was revealed last month that Uber has been in discussions with Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe and a number of city councils regarding the launch of a ride sharing app.

Uber plans to trial the service in the west or south of Ireland - Mr MacGann has described these areas as a “transport desert.”

“We will be bringing a ride sharing service to Ireland,” he confirmed.

This service has been causing controversy across Europe as the company's new take on transport has clashed with local laws and taxi unions.
