Gardaí have been carrying out speed checks around the country as part of National 'Slow Down' Day.

The force says the special speed enforcement operation is being conducted between 7.00am this morning and 7.00am Saturday.

In an update this evening, gardaí say they have checked the speed of 110,383 vehicles - with 172 vehicles travelling in excess of the speed limit.

Gardaí say this is a "high visibility" operation - including speed checks with handheld laser guns, vehicle mounted equipment, and van-mounted speed detection radars.

Although this is a planned operation, it comes as motorists are being warned to take extra care due to potentially hazardous road conditions from Storm Brian.

Chief Superintendent Finbarr Murphy, Roads Policing Bureau explained: "We appeal to drivers to work with us and play their part in reducing injury and tragedy on the road, by supporting our National Slow Down day.

"Please stick strictly to the posted speed limit, but if the road, traffic or especially weather conditions dictate... reduce your speed even further. This will make the journey safer not only for you, but for every road user sharing the road with you.”
