Gardaí say they checked the speed of more than 140,000 vehicles and caught 225 drivers speeding as part of National Slow Down Day.

The campaign - which was run by gardaí in conjunction with GoSafe - saw checkpoints set up across the country to encourage drivers to reduce their speed.

One incident yesterday involved a vehicle travelling at 177 km/h in a 100km/h zone in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Elsewhere, a car on the N4 in Ballisodare, Co Sligo was caught driving at 145 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Another driver was recorded as driving at 87km/h in a 50km/h area on the R712 at Pennefatherslot in Kilkenny.

The 'high visibility' checks were carried out between 7am on Friday and 7am on Saturday.

Speaking after the campaign finished, Chief Superintendent Finbarr Murphy said: "I would like to thank those road users who continue to drive safely and do not put themselves and other road users in danger."

Drivers & other road users are being urged to take extra care today, as Storm Brian brings heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the country.
