Four closure orders were served on food businesses last month, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

Environmental health officers with the HSE issued the orders on restaurants in Cork, Donegal and Tipperary.

The October figures were down on the 10 closure orders issued in September.

Three closure orders were served under the FSAI Act 1998:

  • Beijing Taste Buffet (restaurant), 23-24 North Main Street, Cork
  • Saffron (restaurant), Creeslough, Donegal
  • Chick Chicken (take away), 10 East Beach, Cobh, Cork

In the case of Beijing Taste Buffet, inspectors say they found "prolific evidence of rodent droppings", while at Chick Chicken they discovered "the presence of a live mouse adjacent to food contact materials".

A closure order was also served on New York Pizza (restaurant), Main Street, Ballina, Tipperary under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.

Full details of the closure orders are available on the FSAI website.

Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive of the FSAI explained: “While there has been a decrease in numbers following on from last month’s Enforcement Orders, it is disappointing to see four Closure Orders issued in October.

"Unfortunately there continues to be a small number of food businesses not complying with their legal requirements.  Food businesses must recognise that they are legally bound to ensure that the food they serve is safe to eat.”
