A post-mortem is to be carried out this afternoon on the body of a former Real IRA chief killed in Cork city.
Aidan O'Driscoll (37) was shot repeatedly at around 5pm yesterday evening in the Blackpool area.
He was later pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital.
The Ballyvolane native had links to the Real IRA and this will form a major part of the murder investigation - but Superintendent Michael Comyn says it is still early days.
"Mr O'Driscoll is a son, a father and we will be using all of our resources to solve this," he told reporters.
A post mortem will be carried out this afternoon, and the scene of the shooting has been preserved.
Last night, gardaí recovered two partially burnt-out vehicles - a silver grey Nissan Almeira car on Redemption Road in Blackpool and a Vauxhall Astra van in Killeens, Co Cork.
Garda technical teams are also examining those scenes.
No arrests have been made and gardaí are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area.

The Irish Independent's southern correspondent Ralph Riegel has been following the story.
He explained: "At the moment gardaí are processing the scene. They do know that there were two men.
"They are going through CCTV footage. They're doing a forensic examination of the scene, door-to-door inquiries, and also examining two vehicles that were burnt-out."
