Fire crews remain at the scene of a large gorse fire in County Sligo.

Emergency services have been on site at Killery Mountain since 2:30pm yesterday afternoon, with efforts to fight the blaze having continued overnight.

The blaze covered an extensive area including forestry at Ballintogher - and at one point came close to two houses, which were protected by fire crews.

The fire is affecting an area of approximately 4,000 acres.

In an update this afternoon, Sligo County Council said: "While pockets of gorse and brush fire continue, with access to some areas very difficult, the main focus of attention is in the area of the Millennium Forest adjacent to Slish Wood."

A spokesperson for Sligo Fire Services said that it had been "a long night” for the crews dealing with the blaze on scene – adding that it is unclear as yet whether there has been damage to any property.

Four fire brigade units from Sligo and one from Leitrim are still at the scene.

The public is being urged to stay away from the blaze, and the Dromahair Road between Holy Well and Ballintogher Dromahair Road) is closed and "will remain so until it is deemed safe to re-open".
