New figures have shown a fall-off in the amount of families seeking emergency accommodation in Dublin.

Data from the Dublin Region Homeless Executive shows the net monthly increase of families in emergency accommodation was only five families in August.

That compares to an increase of 54 in July, or 86 families in January.

However, there remains record numbers of homeless families. In total, there were 998 families in emergency accommodation last month.

The number of new families placed in emergency accommodation remained high, with 72 in August. That was a decrease on the 97 recorded in July.

The executive said: "The Dublin Region Homeless Executive welcome this first significant recorded reduction in the net increase.

"It reflects the success of Dublin’s housing-led approach to ending homelessness and confirms that families are moving to back to housing and independent living (with support as required)."
