Fidel Castro has been laid to rest, capping nine days of official mourning in Cuba.

Hundreds of thousands of Cubans said farewell to their former leader with tears and chants of "I am Fidel!"

Castro's ashes were interred at a private ceremony in the city of Santiago following his death last week, aged 90.

Associated Press reports that Cuban officials made a last-minute decision to cancel plans to broadcast today's ceremony.

Raul Castro - Fidel's brother and current Cuban President - has announced his government's intention to prohibit the naming of monuments after the revolutionary leader.

Cuban authorities are attempting to avoid the development of a cult of personality around the late Castro.

"The leader of the revolution rejected any manifestation of a cult of personality and was consistent in that through the last hours of his life," Raul told a crowd in Santiago.

"[He insisted] that, once dead, his name and likeness would never be used on institutions, streets, parks or other public sites, and that busts, statutes or other forms of tribute would never be erected."

Legislation formalising the decision is expected to be agreed in the next session of the Cuban National Assembly.
