About the role

As a key department within Newstalk, Ireland’s fastest growing independent talk radio station, Newstalk Digital provides extensive and unique content for sports fans in Ireland, via multiple digital channels.

Newstalk now has a vacancy for a Digital Journalist to work within the Digital team.

Working in collaboration with Off The Ball, Ireland’s number one sports radio programme, and reporting to the Digital Product Editor the successful candidate will be responsible for sourcing, writing, editing and distributing content across all of Newstalk’s digital channels – Newstalk.com, Newstalk App and all relevant social channels.

As well as having an extensive understanding of sports, the successful candidate is required to have proficiency in creating diverse digital content formats, the role of distribution channels, analytics and SEO.  The candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-starter with ability to seek out stories and use their expertise to analyse and optimally deliver the talking points of the day.

Role requirements

  • Work as part of the digital team to grow Newstalk’s digital audience across all platforms, ensuring the highest levels of quality on all sports content including written, video, audio and imagery etc.
  • Ensure articles are media rich and packaged appropriately for the relevant platform.
  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of content to deliver insights for optimisation.
  • Work across station’s social channels in conjunction with the Social Media Manager.
  • Identify content opportunities for and from on-air programme producers (in particular Off The Ball).
  • Ensure all content adheres to relevant legislation, including defamation and contempt of court.
  • Any other duties as required.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A relevant third level qualification in Journalism, English or related subject.
  • At least 2 years experience working at a high profile media organisation, preferably with a digital focus.
  • A lively, general interest in Irish and international sports stories and how they can be developed . 
  • Experience with video/photo editing software.
  • Keen eye for detail – particularly with text-based content.
  • An active social media presence and excellent knowledge of social platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies.
  • Strong creative skills and passion for innovation.
  • Good understanding of the technical aspects of online publishing and live streaming.
  • Drive, enthusiasm, a high level of initiative and an ability to work accurately while under pressure to meet deadlines.

There is a requirement to work irregular hours including shifts, early mornings, late evenings, weekends and bank holidays, as dictated by events.
