Facebook is set to employ an extra 200 members of staff before the end of 2016.

The new roles at the company's European headquarters in Dublin will bring its total Irish workforce to 1,500.

Facebook has confirmed new extensions to its facilities in the capital means it could now house a workforce of 2,000.

Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook Ireland, says that Ireland has a vital role to play in the social network's global business.

He said of the new jobs:

"Some of these positions serve Facebook's business globally. For example, our Safety & Community operations team, which looks after the trust and safety of all the people who use Facebook.

"Another example is our database engineering team, who's instrumental in making sure that Facebook works seamlessly for the 1.59 billion people who use Facebook every month".

The announcement is another display of its huge investment in Ireland, following January's news that the Silicon Valley company are planning a new data centre in Clonee, Co. Meath, at a cost of €200 million.

Construction on its first partner centre outside its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, will begin in the coming months and reach completion by 2018.
