Scrolling through Instagram is a fruitless exercise in thirst traps, body dysmorphia, and filtered affluence. But at least it presents a new fitness craze that is quite cute and also probably best avoided.

Like challenges ice bucket and cinnamon before it, a new hashtag has revealed a surprising craze in the world of social media exercise. Instead of kettle bells, people are grabbing onto beagles and using their pooches as resistance for their squats.

Now a growing – and occasionally growling – sensation is spreading far and wide on Instagram, with fitness fanatics and scene-stealing Shih Tzus in their hundreds amassing and gaining mass under the hashtag #SquatYourDogChallenge.

We’d be lying if we said there was really much more to it than that – to be honest, vets and personal trainers probably wouldn’t recommend it. Some dogs are heavier than others, by merit of some dogs being larger than others. But the videos are pretty cute and who doesn’t like dogs?!
