Pat Hickey will remain in hospital overnight - he was taken ill this morning as Brazilian police were serving him with an arrest warrant as part of an investigation into alleged ticket touting.

He was admitted to Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro for "investigation of chest pain" and due to his "previous cardiac history he will remain in hospital for a further 24 hours".

Earlier it was announced that Mr Hickey would step aside temporarily as President of the OCI following his arrest this morning.


Reports suggest the Russian fighter who controversially beat Michael Conlan could pull out of his semi-final.

Vladimir Nikitin was controversially awarded the decision against Team Ireland's Conlan in the bantamweight quarter-final bout on Tuesday.

The Russian is due to face Team USA's Shakur Stevenson in the semi-final on Thursday. 

But Team USA coach and ex-head coach of Ireland's High Performance unit Billy Walsh told StiffJab.com that Nikitin is pulling out of the semi because "his face was a mess" according to Russian coaches.


It is understood that an Irish man has been shot in Majora.

The incident happened in Costa de la Calma - around 15 miles from the capital Palma.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and its officials are providing consular assistance.


Over €700,000 worth of drugs have been seized in two separate operations today.

Gardaí in Dublin seized heroin, cocaine and cannabis herb with an estimated value of €580,000.

A man in his 30's was arrested and is currently being detained at Finglas Garda Station.

Separately, drugs with an estimated street value of €126,000 were seized in county Limerick.


Students have been warned to look out for accommodation scams as they begin the difficult search for housing after today’s release of Leaving Cert results.

The Irish Property Owners Association (IPOA) has advised prospective tenants to ask landlords for some form of identification, such as a membership card or utility bill, to confirm ownership of the house or apartment being rented.

This will help students avoid many of the kind of bogus operations that scam people out of thousands of euro in deposits each year.
