A poison alert has reportedly been issued to dog owners in parts of south east Clare.

It follows reports of poisoned sausage meat being left on canal walks.

It is believed a number of dogs have become ill after ingesting poisoned substances while walking on routes between Ardnacrusha and Clonlara.

Warning signs have also reportedly been posted it in the area.

Dog owners are being urged to exercise caution and keep their dog on a lead.

For its part, Clare County Council says it has received no calls or complaints.

However this is not the first time such an issue has come up.

Back in 2014, up to six dogs died in Clonlara after ingesting a poisonous substance.

This included one animal who was found dead just yards from a national school.
