Details have been confirmed of the first meeting of the Citizens' Assembly next month.

It was confirmed earlier this month that the assembly - which is being chaired by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy - would meet for the first time on October 15th.

The first meeting at Dublin Castle is being described as a 'inaugural session', where members will be able to meet each other and gain a better understanding of their role.

"It will also be an opportunity for the Members to consider the key principles which will underpin the work of the Assembly and the Rules and Procedures which will govern it," according to a statement.

They will then hold a second meeting on the 25th of November to begin discussing the issue of the 8th Amendment.

Representative groups, citizen organisations and members of the public will be asked to submit their views ahead of assembly meetings.

The report on the Eighth Amendment will be submitted to the Houses of the Oireachtas after a series of meetings. The report is expected to be completed in the first half of 2017.

All meetings will be streamed online.

The assembly of 99 randomly selected citizens will consider five issues, starting with the 8th Amendment.

Subsequent sessions will look at:

  • how we best respond to the challenges and opportunities of an ageing population
  • fixed term parliaments
  • the manner in which referenda are held
  • how the State can make Ireland a leader in tackling climate change
