The jury at the Carrickmines fire inquest has heard two children were passed out the window of a burning caravan.

Dublin Coroner’s Court has been hearing from members of the Connors family who rushed to the scene of the fire at Glenamuck halting site in south Dublin.

Ten people died in the blaze that started when a chip pan caught fire in the early hours of October 10th 2015.

Two brothers of the owner of the caravan that went on fire gave evidence of pulling a three-year-old boy and a baby girl out of the mobile home.

The fire quickly spread to another unit and a total of five adults and five children lost their lives.

Night of the fire

Thomas Connors lived in a mobile home on the site just off Glenamuck Road with his wife Sylvia and their children.

On the night of the fire, Sylvia’s brothers Jimmy and Willie, Willie’s partner Tara and their children were visiting.

In his statement to the inquest, Thomas’ brother Jimmy Jnr said he’d been drinking with them in Thomas’ hut but returned to his own around 2am.

Sometime later, he said he was woken by his wife who was screaming at him.

He said he jumped out of his bed and ran up to Thomas’.

He said he could see flames and kicked in the front door but couldn't go in.

Instead, he broke two windows and managed to pull his six-month-old niece Mary out.

His sister Kathleen brought her to her own mobile home, but that soon caught fire too and baby Mary didn’t survive.

Her parents and two siblings also died, as well as the Lynches who were visiting that night.

The inquest continues.
