Footage has captured the moment a sinkhole formed in the US state of California.

It caved into a sewage drain below the surface of the road in Madera.

The local police department shared the footage of the hole, which measured 12 feet by 15 feet.

It was estimated to be between 15 to 20 feet deep.

It is unknown what exactly caused the damage - but police say it is likely due to recent rainfall.

A large portion of the roadway on Schnoor Avenue, north of Howard Avenue and south of 5th Street, has collapsed. It is unknown what exactly caused the damage but it is likely due to the recent rains. The street fell into the sewage line. So far about 12 ft by 15 ft section of roadway has collapsed, and it is approximately 15 to 20 feet deep. The roadway is expected to be closed for an extended amount of time for repair. DF 3621
