Business owners in Cork have again criticised the failure to build proper flood defences in the city.

Many streets were underwater yesterday and some businesses were inundated after heavy rain combined with a high tide.

High tide is expected in Cork at around 10am this morning, however the flooding is not expected to be as bad as at the weekend.

Millions of euro in damage has been caused by flooding in recent years, with many being forced to trade without flood insurance.

Laurence Owens from the Cork Business Association says it is not good enough.

"In 2014, the then minister Brian Hayes said this project would be shovel ready by 2015. I don't see any shovels," he explained.

Meanwhile, three fisherman have been rescued when their trawler sank in stormy conditions off the coast of Cork.

The 20 foot vessel hit rocks near the entrance to Kinsale harbour and issued a mayday call.

Three Portugese fisherman were rescued from the boat, by the RNLI and the Coastguard helicopter.
