The British Prime Minister has insisted she is providing "calm leadership" with the "full support" of her Cabinet.

Theresa May was responding to claims of a plot involving senior Tory Mps to oust her from Number 10 Downing Street.

It comes following the critical response to her speech at the Conservative Party Conference last weekend – as well as ongoing disagreements over Brexit.

She suffered a series of coughing fits through her address, which was also interrupted by a comedian who handed her a P45 – claiming he had been asked to do so by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Speaking in her Maidenhead constituency this afternoon, Mrs told reporters she had "had a cold all week" - but she insisted all ministers backed her to remain in the top job.

She added that MPs would get an update on her Florence speech next week.

Resignation call

Mrs May's comments follow former party chairman Grant Shapps' claim that he and 30 other MPs - including "one or two Cabinet ministers" - had agreed to call on her to resign.

He said on Friday his party "must look for a new leader."

It followed an intervention from former minister Ed Vaizey, who revealed he was finding it "increasingly difficult" to see a way forward with Mrs May at the helm.

Support

But two serving British Cabinet ministers have come out to defend Mrs May.

Environment secretary Michael Gove - who ran against her in last year's leadership election - said ousting Mrs May would be a betrayal of everyone who voted Conservative in the general election or backed Leave in the EU referendum.

While home secretary Amber Rudd insisted the PM "should stay" despite the "presentation fails" in her problem-plagued conference speech.
