At least 10 people have been injured in the US after their plane hit turbulence during a flight from Panama to Houston yesterday.

The United Airlines Boeing 737 jet was flying over Mexico at the time, around 130 km east of Cancun.

The plane landed safely at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport following the incident, with paramedics meeting the plane on landing.

CBS News reports that the injured people included nine passengers and one crew member, who were all taken to hospital.

In a statement quoted by the Houston Chronicle, the company said: "Our thoughts and concerns are with those who were injured and our team is reaching out directly to our customers to provide further care and support."

The incident came as Tropical Storm Cindy strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico, with facilities along the US Gulf Coast bracing themselves for potential flooding and disruption.
