The deceased's identity has not yet been released. Gardaí have said he is a 31-year-old Polish national who had been resident in Longford for some time.

CCTV footage is being analysed as part of the investigations.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident yesterday, and he is being detained at Longford Garda Station.

He will appear before Mullingar District Court tomorrow morning at 10.30am charged in connection with the stabbing.

Superintendent Jim Delaney earlier today made an appeal for information.

"I would appeal to any persons that were in and around Longford Town Shopping Centre or Rue Noyal Chetillon in and around 12 midday yesterday that observed any altercation between two males who were casually dressed," he said.
