Appeal after cyclist dies following Westmeath collision

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision in Westmeath.

It happened at 3.45pm Tuesday between a car and a pedal cyclist on the N52, four miles north of Mullingar.

The cyclist - a man aged in his 70s - was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to Midlands Regional Hospital.

A post mortem examination is expected to take place tomorrow in Tullamore Hospital.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 70s, was uninjured.

The scene is being examined by garda forensic collision investigators, and the road will remain closed overnight.
