Actor Ben Affleck has announced his decision to step down as director of the upcoming, “The Batman” film.

American show-business magazine Variety reports that Affleck and Warner Bros. came to the decision together, “after discussing how to best make the film possible.”

Affleck will focus on producing and starring in the film and will now join the search for a new director.

Matt Reeves, director of “War for the Planet of the Apes” is reportedly a front-runner for the role.

In a statement, Affleck said he remains “extremely committed” to the project and is looking forward to “bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” he said. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give.

“It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.

Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.”

A statement from Warner Bros. said the studio “fully supports” Affleck’s decision and  “remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

The 44-year-old made his first appearance as The Caped Crusader in last year’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and has completed his shooting on ‘Justice League’ - which is due for release on Nov 17th this year.

The actor was preparing to begin work on ‘The Batman’ this summer after co-writing the script with DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns.
