Following a one-off special last year, the Crystal Maze is set to return for a full season.

Channel 4 has confirmed IT Crowd star and film director Richard Ayoade will present 20 hour-long episodes of the new series.

The new series will be filmed in a 30,000 square foot maze, set to be built in a studio in Bristol in the UK. The maze is being created by original Crystal Maze designer James Dillon.

Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Future zones will feature in the new maze, as well as the Crystal Dome. Teams will consist of five contestants.

More than four million viewers watched the 'Stand up to Cancer' special episode of the Crystal Maze in October, which was presented by Stephen Merchant.

Tom Beck of Channel 4 said a new series was 'almost a no-brainer' following the charity special.

"I couldn’t be more pleased and excited that Richard has agreed to become the new Maze Master – he’s an inspired choice," he added.

The cult game show originally ran between 1990 and 1995. It was first presented by Rocky Horror star Richard O'Brien, with Ed Tudor-Pole taking over for later seasons.
