Who ya gonna call? Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott
Ahead of July’s release of Ghostbusters, the Paul Feig-directed all-new, all-female reboot of the 1980s franchise, a new version of the movie’s iconic theme song has just been released, performed by Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott.
The original song, by Ray Parker Jr, was a huge hit in 1984, topping the singles charts in France, Germany, South Africa, Spain, as well as the Billboard Hot 100. The record achieved gold status in the UK and the US, and was nominated for ‘Best Original Song’ at the 57th Academy Awards, ultimately losing out to Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You.
Parker Jr was approached to write the song by the film’s producers, with only a few days to complete it. Huey Lewis would eventually go on to sue Parker over similarities in the melody of Ghostbusters to his own song I Want a New Drug, with the matter settled out of court.
Both the Parker version as well as the Fall Out Boy one will be featured on the new film’s soundtrack, which also includes music from Ell King, G-Eazy, Jeremih, 5 Seconds of Summer, Pentatonix, Walk the Moon, Wolf Alice, and others.
You can hear the new version of the song in the video below. Ghostbusters stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones and will be released worldwide on July 15th.
