WATCH: Trailer for "Jason Bourne" sees the return of Matt Damon

It's been almost a decade since he played the amnesiac spy

Having made just under a billion dollars combined, the original Bourne trilogy proved to be a massive hit with audiences and critics, with it's influence even being felt in the James Bond series of movies that followed.

Lead star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass left the series following Identity, Supremacy and, finally, 2007's Ultimatum, leaving the door open for Jeremy Renner to continue the franchise in 2012's Legacy.

However, that movie's middling box office and reviews made the producers go back to the drawing board, and while Greengrass continued working on high profile projects like Green Zone and Captain Phillips, both he and Damon have been lured back to series.

Damon plays the once amnesiac spy who now seems to remember everything, but is still on the hunt for more information, with a returning Julia Stiles in tow. New cast additions include Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel.

Jason Bourne will return to Irish cinemas on July 28th.
