Internet Loveliness: 10 things to check out on the web this week

From finding out how the body changes to designing a new habit for yourself, we've got you covered

When it comes to surfing the web, it's easy to get lost at sea. So let Moncrieff's regular guest Darragh Doyle, a man who knows a thing or two about what's weird and wonderful online, steer you in the right direction.

You can listen back to his full segment below, but here's what you need to know from the Internet this week...

Tackle Your Feelings is a new mental wellbeing campaign that sees national and international rugby stars tell their own personal story of the issues they have faced off the pitch.  The first players to tell their personal stories are Ireland and Leinster front-row Jack McGrath who speaks emotively about how he coped with the death of his brother by suicide in 2010 and Irish women’s player, Hannah Tyrrell, who talks about how she overcame her struggles with self-harm and bulimia. Their videos are hosted on the new website www.tackleyourfeelings.com.

The Letters of 1916 project is the first public humanities project in Ireland. It is creating a crowd-sourced digital collection of letters written around the time of the Easter Rising (1 November 1915 – 31 October 1916). Letters cover all aspects of life, from major political events, the Easter Rising and the Great War, to letters that provide us with a candid and unmediated glimpse into ordinary life, love and work a century ago. Art and Literature (30), Battle of the Somme (19), Crime (56), Easter Rising Ireland 1916 (500), Faith (13), Love Letters (9), World War 1: 1914-1918 (215).

These letters have been transcribed by thousands of people around the world and proofed by the Letters of 1916 team. You can join over 1300 transcribers and help people learn more.

An Post is bringing you closer to the streets of 1916 Dublin to witness the lesser-known stories of the Rising. At various locations across Dublin, painted red post boxes become beacons for the events they witnessed a hundred years ago.

So you just free-text the word (STEPHENS, MOUNT, GRAFTON, EDEN and KINGSTOWN) on the Postbox to 50100 and you’ll get a link with a video back. Find out more here.

WINGiT is a unique app that allows you to discover cool events shared by local insiders on social networks and do what locals do wherever you go. Wingit searches all social media sites for all the cool events happening now or tonight in the city.

For those who struggle with their weight, one of the more challenging things to deal with beyond, of course, the lifestyle changes that have to accompany any attempts at weight reduction, is often the inability to see progress. Because weight loss is often very slow and incremental, many get frustrated with a perceived lack of results and then give up. A new application called Progress wants to solve that problem, and does so with a simple solution.

If you’re worried about the etiquette of using a Smartwatch, a Fitness Tracker, a Drone or your new Virtual Reality Headset, here’s the website for you. Featuring little tips of what they feel is the polite ways to handle the new technology that’s out there, you don’t have to be worried about what it’s rude to do again!

Bored? Send a photo, GIF, or quote. You don’t have to pick one, just let Rando do it. If you’re really brave, you can even send it blindly.

Rando. It’s random. It picks photos from your Camera Roll, GIFs from Giphy, and quotes, and then you send them to someone however you want. Text, Facebook, Twitter, whatever. You can look at them first if you want, or not. It’s a conversation-starter… or stopper.

Build new tiny habits that make a huge difference. Habitloop shows you what tiny steps are the most efficient and how to make them stick for good! This habit forming methodology was proven in over 100 studies.

Here is how it works: Let’s say, if you want to start losing weight, you’ll need to develop few efficient habits. For example: “After I enter the office building, I will take the stairs.”

The app will remind you about it at first, but overtime your natural action trigger (entering the office building) will take over. The more often you allow your new action to be triggered by natural cue, the higher the chance that habit sticks for a long long time.

Record video or selfie animations, change the way you look and send it to friends via your favorite messengers and social networks. Kind of like pulling a mask on and recording videos on your phone. It’s a little bit Mission Impossible, a little bit James Bond, a lot silly and something the kids will love.

Hiboo is a messaging app that lets you see what your friends type while they're typing. Its creators say it’s the only messenger that allows you to communicate at the speed of thought. It does get rid of the whole “I wonder what they’re typing, it’s been 5 minutes....” but could also be a complete recipe for disaster. One for those who commit to typing and go with it.

Infinite Sunsets is a simple site that searches for images tagged #sunset on Instagram and pulls together the nicest ones to display in your browser on an endless loop. There are almost 100 million images tagged #sunset on Instagram right now and they make up some of the most serene scenes on the platform. Each image comes with information on where it was taken, a timestamp and the photographer’s name.

  • Vlogger- Paul Mahon

Paul Mahon and his partner, Zoë have just welcomed baby Zelda into the world and now he's busy documenting "what it means to be a dad in Ireland in 2016". He’s mentioned how so many of his friends  are having babies, "but nobody really seems to have a clue what they're doing".

So, he and Zoë (an absolute hero of a woman by the way), have taken the insanely brave decision to document every step of the new-dad experience. Great videos by a talented videomaker.
