Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz co-star in the weep-fest adaptation
Despite both being up for Oscars this Sunday for their performances in Steve Jobs and The Danish Girl respectively, both Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander can consider themselves frontrunners for the 2017 Oscar race too.
That's thanks to the adaptation of The Light Between Oceans, based on M. L. Stedman's much-loved 2012 novel, here directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond The Pines).
It tells the story of a couple living a life of happy solitude on a quiet island, when one day a very young baby girl is washed up on shore. They decide to raise the child as their own daughter, until several years later, a stranger (Rachel Weisz) arrives, telling the story of how her husband and newborn daughter were lost at sea.
The movie will be released in the States on September 8th this year - which is prime release scheduling for Oscar consideration - and this side of the Atlantic will have to wait a little longer, with the film due for release here on January 6th 2017.
