The best movies from 2010 to 2015

The year's up, so we're looking back to the start of the decade

We're past the half-way mark for this decade, so now is as good a time as any to look back over the cinematic landscape of the '10s and see how we've been doing so far.

It has certainly been a very mixed bunch, with some movies that achieved critical acclaim at the time now wilting, while others that were passed over by the awards ceremonies are garnering cult status.

We've picked five films from each year, and presented them in alphabetical order. How many have you seen?

12 YEARS A SLAVE (2013)

Why is it one of the best? Strong performances coupled with the tough subject matter, all from a master director who is still only at the beginning of his career.

ARGO (2012)

Why is it one of the best? On top of it being a hugely entertaining ticking-clock thriller, we also got properly introduced to Ben Affleck's directorial skills.

THE ARTIST (2011)

Why is it one of the best? A black and white silent movie might have turned a lot of people off if it weren't for the fact that it's also one of the most adorably romantic movies ever made.

THE AVENGERS (2012)

Why is it one of the best? We got to see Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk and more share the screen in one of the best popcorn blockbusters of all time.

THE BABADOOK (2014)

Why is it one of the best? Every few years we're gifted with a truly amazing horror movie. This is that truly amazing horror movie.

BEFORE MIDNIGHT (2013)

Why is it one of the best? We've been watching this relationship grow up and mature just as we did, and there's no other cinematic relationship that we're more invested in than this one.

BLACK SWAN (2010)

Why is it one of the best? It should win some kind of award for making ballet this psychologically scary. Oh wait, it did, it won all of those Oscars...

BRIDESMAIDS (2011)

Why is it one of the best? One of the funniest movies of the last few years, it also introduced the concept of "secret magazine and wine parties".

BOYHOOD (2014)

Why is it one of the best? 13 years in the making, a young boy turns into a young man before our eyes, whilst experiencing one of the purest forms of nostalgia ever created.

CALVARY (2014)

Why is it one of the best? Arguably one of the finest Irish films ever made.

DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012)

Why is it one of the best? With Tarantino on flying form, his usual cut-throat wit and penchant for violence was brought to bear on one of the ugliest periods in American history.

DRIVE (2011)

Why is it one of the best? In hindsight, its quite possibly the most influential movie of the last decade or so.

FROZEN (2013)

Why is it one of the best? All together now... "Let it go! Let it goooooooo!"

GONE GIRL (2014)

Why is it one of the best? One of the most best-selling books of the century as seen through the eyes of master director, and one of the best around, David Fincher, produced a match made in heaven.

GRAVITY (2013)

Why is it one of the best? An extraordinary big-screen experience that proved just what modern cinema can do, and why it's still so important.

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART TWO (2011)

Why is it one of the best? Eight movies and ten years later, the Potter saga finally came to an end in suitably cathartic and explosive fashion.

INCEPTION (2010)

Why is it one of the best? Big budget visuals met indie-minded storytelling, with Leo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy on flying form.

INSIDE OUT (2015)

Why is it one of the best? Pixar's return to form provided one of the most blazingly original films in some time, that was very funny, very smart and very emotional.

IT FOLLOWS (2015)

Why is it one of the best? If you put Halloween, The Ring and Drive into a big pot, It Follows would be the scare-fest that creeps its way out afterwards.

THE LEGO MOVIE (2014)

Why is it one of the best? Proof that you don't need to be Disney or Pixar to create masterpiece animation movies.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015)

Why is it one of the best? Because it's probably the best action movie since Die Hard.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (2010)

Why is it one of the best? It's the dictionary definition of undervalued cult classic in the making, with a cast-list to make most blockbusters drool out of jealousy. It is also probably the best video-game movie to date (despite it not actually being based on a video-game).

SHAME (2011)

Why is it one of the best? Sex is something of a taboo for a lot of Hollywood, so for a film to face it head-on and come out the other side as a considered, painfully real essay on obsession is something of a miracle.

SICARIO (2015)

Why is it one of the best? The most relentlessly tense movie Hollywood has produced in some time, with a trio of heavy-hitting performances from Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin.

SKYFALL (2012)

Why is it one of the best? After fifty years of Bond, this could be considered the best of the lot, and is certainly the prettiest!

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)

Why is it one of the best? Something of a modern-day Citizen Kane, it tells the story of a self-made man and his ascent to power that proved to be utterly spellbinding.

TOY STORY 3 (2010)

Why is it one of the best? The most perfect ending to the most perfect trilogy of films ever made.

UNDER THE SKIN (2013)

Why is it one of the best? Playing the part of an alien that uses sex to kill human males, Scarlett Johansson was back to her best. Despite that raunchy-sounding plot, the film is both upsetting and unsettling in equal measure, harking back to Kubrick in his prime.

WHIPLASH (2015)

Why is it one of the best? It made jazz druming seem cool, it's got Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons in an immense head-to-head act-off.

ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012)

Why is it one of the best? Dealing with the hottest of hot-topics, it dumps the viewer in the midst of it all. Meanwhile, Jessica Chastain brings all of her acting know-how to the role.
