Legendary singer Tom Petty is 'clinging to life' following a heart attack at his home, according to reports in the US.

The 66-year-old singer was rushed to hospital after being found “unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest” according to entertainment news site TMZ.

The website reported that on his arrival to hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially told CBS News that the singer had died, but later said it could not confirm the news.

Petty completed a major tour last Monday with the final show at the Hollywood Bowl.

He rose to fame with ‘Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ in 1978 with the hit "Breakdown."

The group went on to release a range of hits including "American Girl," "Free Fallin" and "Listen to Her Heart."
