Homophobia, is it different? Is it deeper? And will it ever go away?

When Omar Mateen shot dead 49 people and injured dozens more in the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, reaction quickly descended into an argument as to whether his crime was motivated by religious fundamentalism against western society in general or very specifically by homophobia. Did the denial of his motivation represent a kind of homophobia in itself?
