He was also impressed by Wayne Rooney's first half against Reading in the FA Cup
Pat Nevin believes Manchester United have the best depth of squad in the Premier League this season.
After a slow start to the Premier League season, which saw Jose Mourinho's side win just four of their opening 10 games, their recent form has been strong.
The Reds have now won their last six league games on the bounce, although they still remain sixth.
However, they have put themselves right back into the mix for the Top Four, even if a title challenge remains a distant prospect with 10 points standing between themselves and leaders Chelsea.
Ex-Scotland, Chelsea and Everton winger Nevin was at Old Trafford to see United defeat a Reading side managed by former United defensive favourite Jaap Stam in the FA Cup and is impressed with the squad.
"I think they've got an incredible depth of squad at Manchester United," he told Off The Ball.
"I think they've got by a distance the best gifted squad in the league and if they hadn't fallen behind quite so far, they were absolutely in the running."
Nevin also noted captain Wayne Rooney's high work rate against Reading - a match in which he scored a goal that allows him to equal Bobby Charlton's all time goalscoring mark for the club.
"He was absolutely sparkling. And wait for this: he was running behind defenders," he said.
"It's such a jump out to you because it's so unusual for him in the last little while."
