Former Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan says Jose Mourinho should "get rid" of Manchester United assistant Ryan Giggs should he be the one to succeed Louis van Gaal.

It looks almost certain that Mourinho will be the next manager of the club and the ex-Chelsea and Crystal Palace full-back feels Giggs should not be part of the next phase of United's future.

"Get rid of him. Get him out!" said Paddy on this week's Rewind podcast.

"I wouldn't have him near me. Get him out straight away. I wouldn't have him near me because I don't think he's got an awful lot to offer Man United at this juncture. I think he would be better off learning his trade in a lower division to see what the real world is all about, instead of being cocooned, sitting on the bench as a No 2 and not taking any criticism and more importantly not adding anything from the touchline."
