He may be one of the most famous footballers in the world, but Cristiano Ronaldo also keeps an eye on social events taking place closer to home.

The 32-year-old is a dog lover, and has donated a signed Real Madrid of his to a dog shelter in the Portuguese province of Gouveia. Following a request from the Cantinho da Lili, the Ballon d'Or winner sent a jersey, from which the funds received will help with day-to-day costs.

"I want to thank Ronaldo from the bottom of my heart. It's a simple gesture, but very important," Liliana Santos told Correrio de Mahna. The jersey was sent from Ronaldo in November, but only reached its destination last week due to postal issues.

"The important thing is that it's already here and we still do not believe it," Gloria Carvalho added. The duo hope that by auctioning the jersey, they will be able to provide for 80 dogs currently under their care.

Ronaldo has previously spoken about his love for dogs, claiming he wished he could have some in Manchester. He cited the Mancunian weather as a reason for, deciding to hold off until moving to Real Madrid.

The Portuguese star has previously donated sums to UNICEF and World Vision, and has been called the World's Most Generous Athlete.
