Saul "Canelo" Alvarez set to face off against Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. in Mexican super-fight

The bout will take place on the Cinco de Mayo weekend

Mexican stars Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. have agreed a fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend this summer.

The bout will be broadcast on pay-per-view in the US and is expected to generate plenty of buzz in the lead up to the fight.

Alvarez heads into the bout with a record of 48-1-1 (34 KOs) with his sole defeat coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather jr.

He has won his last 6 bouts since that defeat which included a decision victory over Miguel Cotto and a devastating knock-out of Amir Khan.

Chavez Jr. is the son of the Mexican legend of the same name and will enter the contest with a 50-2-1 (32 KOs). He has victories over Irish fighters Andy Lee and John Duddy. His two defeats came against middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and Andrej Fonfara.

The fight will take place at a catchweight of 164.5 lbs in what most believe is an attempt to familiarise Alvarez to fighting at over 160 lbs. He currently holds titles in the 154 lbs light-middleweight division.

The boxing world has been crying out for a match-up between Alvarez and middleweight king Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and that fight is expected to take place this September.

Golovkin faces Danial Jacobs in March.
