Federer is competing in Australia at the Hopman Cup
Meeting your hero can be an emotional experience.
That was the situation a 10-year-old girl named Lily found herself in at the Hopman Cup when she came face-to-face with Roger Federer.
Lily met the Swiss legend ahead of performing the coin-toss for the mixed-doubles match between Switzerland and Germany, in Perth. When waiting for the German team to take their places at the net, Lily was able to speak to the Basel native, but was unable to stop the tears.
Wearing a Swiss t-shirt, the Federer fan asked the 35-year-old to pick heads-or-tails. He returned the favour and let Lily pick on his behalf. Luckily for Federer and his partner Belinda Bencic the call of "heads" turned out to be the right one.
After losing to Alexander Zverev earlier in the day, Federer gained revenge as he and Bencic defeated Zverev and his partner Andrea Petkovic.
The Hopman Cup is part of Federer's preparations for the Australian Open later this month. He is hoping to win the year's first Grand Slam for a fifth time overall, and first since 2010.
