Republic of Ireland has been chosen as hosts of the European Under-17 Championships in 2019.

The announced was made by UEFA on Friday evening at an executive committee meeting in Nyon.

It will mark the first time Ireland have hosted the event, although they did host the Under-16 tournament in 1994 which was eventually replaced by the current Under-17 format.

It was also confirmed that Estonia will host the 2020 edition.

Northern Ireland will stage the UEFA Under-19 tournament in 2020.

Ireland won the tournament in 1998 under Brian Kerr with a squad featuring future internationals John O'Shea, Andy Reid and Liam Miller.

It was a successful era for Ireland at underage level with victory in the Under-18 tournament in the same year.
