Nico Rosberg has opened up about the final Grand Prix of the season and his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton's tactics on the day.

Speaking at a press conference in Wiesbaden, he said: "My joy was even greater after the race because it was so tough," he said. "I didn't know how far [he] would go. Would he go completely crazy and try to run me off the track? You just don't know.

"I saw what he tried to do and I knew - just one small mistake from my side and the two guys behind me are past and it's gone. Then, in only two laps, my work for one whole season would have been for nothing. It was unbelievable."

Although Hamilton started the race on pole, Rosberg could afford to finish in third to claim the world title regardless of where Hamilton finished up. With the pair in first and second, Hamilton slowed down in the second part of the race, forcing Rosberg back into the chasing pack and one mistake away from losing the title.

Rosberg held his nerve to finish second in Abu Dhabi and won his maiden F1 World Championship in the process.

However, Rosberg understood his teammate's tactics saying: "But I also understand Lewis. We fight, and we fight for the world title. You want to try everything and maybe you go over the limit in the process to maybe make it possible after all."

The schedule for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship was released earlier today and Rosberg will be denied the chance to race in front of his home fans after a deal to host a race at Hockenheim could not be agreed.
