Rosberg finished second behind Hamilton in the final race
Nico Rosberg is the 2016 F1 champion.
A top-three placing was required for Rosberg to be crowned the world champion, which he did by finishing second behind his rival Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton made significant attempts to thwart Rosberg's title challenge, by slowing down in the concluding stages of the race, despite calls from his Mercedes team to speed up.
The English driver was issued an instruction to aim for a 1.45.1 time for the win but in his response, Hamilton was heard to have replied:
"I suggest you guys let us race."
Despite Hamilton's efforts, Rosberg prevailed to become the 12th German to capture the title, following in the steps of Michael Schumacher among others. The title was also won by his father Keke in 1982. This is also Rosberg's first title win over Hamilton in his career.
He duly celebrated with a few customary donuts, while at the podium, Hamilton and Rosberg said very little to each other during the latter's coronation.
