Newcastle's lead at the top of the Championship has been cut to two points.
Struggling Blackburn moved out of the relegation zone by getting a 1-0 win at St James' Park - ending an eight-match winning run in the league for Rafa Benitez's side.
Scotland international Charlie Mulgrew got the only goal with 15 minutes to go, while Meath native and Ireland under-21 defender Darragh Lenihan was at centre-back for Blackburn.
Ciaran Clark also started at centre-back for Newcastle.
Ex-Ireland defender Chris Hughton watched his Brighton side take advantage of the Magpies' result by coming from behind to beat Fulham 2-1.
Glenn Murray scored the winner 12 minutes from time.
Elsewhere Aston Villa beat Cardiff City 3-1 at home and Norwich City's poor form continued with a 1-0 loss at Derby County - a fifth defeat in a row.
Villa are now up to 11th, just three points off the playoff places and two behind Norwich.

Ireland qualified forward Scott Hogan scored for Brentford but was on the losing side as Birmingham City beat them 2-1 away. That was Hogan's 11th of the season.
