His career with the Glasgow club is over after just eight matches
Joey Barton has had his contract terminated at Rangers.
After joining on a free transfer in the summer, he has not played for the Scottish Premiership side since September, amid a training ground bust-up.
In a short statement on the club website, the Glasgow club confirmed: "Rangers and Joey Barton have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Neither Rangers nor Joey Barton will comment further."
Barton took to Twitter shortly after the announcement that his time with Rangers is over by thanking supporters.
I'd like to thank the supporters of Rangers for their incredible support during my time at the club. Wish you all the best for the future.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) November 10, 2016
The veteran midfielder had been involved in a heated argument with a team-mate after the 5-1 loss to Celtic in the Old Firm derby.
He served a club suspension which barred him for training for several weeks, and was signed off with stress earlier this week.
In October, Barton had also been charged with betting on 44 football matches by the Scottish Football Association.
The 34-year-old has made just eight appearances since joining Rangers in the summer.
