Season 20 of 'South Park' began in America on Wednesday night, with the national anthem controversy involving Colin Kaepernick and other NFL stars taking centre stage.

The episode's story-line revolves around Mr. Garrison running to become President of the United States. When he realises he is nowhere near qualified to hold the office, he decides to sit down during the national anthem while attending a football match to ruin his chances.

His plan is ruined when attending the Carolina Panthers-San Francisco 49ers game after the Kaepernick incident. According to the episode, everyone is now allowed to "rise or sit or take a knee to honour America."

In the episode, the idea came when film director JJ Abrams rebooted the anthem. According to the logic of the show, Abrams "saved Star Wars, and now we will ask him to save our country".
