Germany's Angelique Kerber claimed her second Grand Slam title of the year with a three-sets win over Karolina Pliskova in the US Open.

The win has cemented Kerber's place at the top of the World Rankings for the first time in her career. The German star has featured in three of the year's Grand Slam finals (winning two) and was also a silver medallist at the Olympic Games.

Kerber won the first set 6-3, before losing the second 4-6. She won the deciding set 6-4, in a match that lasted over two hours.

"It's incredible", Kerber said post-match. "I'm standing here with a second Grand Slam trophy and it means so much to me."

"It means a lot to me. When I was a kid, I was always dreaming to be the number one player in the world and to win Grand Slams, and today's the day."

Kerber's jump to World number one, knocks Serena Williams off the top spot. The two stars won one of their two Grand Slam finals against each other in 2015.

The men's final on Sunday night sees Novak Djokovic face Stan Wawrinka for the second time in a Grand Slam final. Wawrinka shocked the Serb in last year's French Open final.
