An unnamed Irish athlete from the Olympic team has reportedly been reprimanded for placing "inappropriate bets".

According to The Irish Independent, the person in question was investigated after being found to have placed bets on events while in Rio.

But the paper also cited sources saying that the athlete "did it inadvertently".

The Irish Independent also quoted an unnamed source as saying that the International Olympic Committee have handled the issue and "suggested that [the athlete takes] part in an education programme on best practice for sports people".

The paper said the IOC had not responded to queries on the matter.
