Usain Bolt's Olympic career ended with a ninth gold medal on Friday night, as Jamaica retained their 4x100 metre relay title.

The 100-metre and 200-metre champion led home a team that included Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade to beat Japan by a third of a second. The United States finished in third place, but were disqualified for an illegal baton change. Canada were promoted to third place.

Despite competing in Lane One, the American women's 4x100 metre relay comfortably won gold. The team which included Alyson Felix defeated Jamaica and Great Britain.

In basketball, the United States and Serbia will meet each other in the Olympic Final. The Americans defeated Spain in their semi-final, 82-76. A first-half performance from Serbia was enough to defeat Australia in the second semi-final. The European side won 87-61.

Germany are the Women's Football champions. In an all-European final at the Maracana Stadium, the Germans defeated Sweden 2-1. Canada defeated the hosts Brazil to win the bronze medal.

In hockey, Great Britain won the women's final. In a dramatic penalty shootout, the British team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 after the game finished 3-3 in normal time.
