Police officer shot and killed in Rio after taking wrong turn in unfamiliar neighbourhood

The man and his colleagues were travelling through unfamiliar streets before their van was sprayed with bullets

A police officer was shot and killed when he and two other security officers working at the Olympics in Rio got lost in the Brazilian capital and gunfire ensued.

Brazil's Justice Minister announced the death of Helio Vieira news via his official Facebook page early Friday morning.

According to reports, the officers were navigating their way through unfamiliar streets with a GPS before taking a wrong turn. Their van was subsequently "sprayed with bullets", which resulted in the death of Mr. Vieira.

The two officers travelling with the deceased suffered minor injuries.
