Ireland's 4x400 relay team miss out on Olympic qualification by an agonising margin

They were just off the qualifying time

Ireland's 4x400 relay team put in a strong performance to finish fifth in today's European Championship final.

But unfortunately it meant that the quartet of Thomas Barr, David Gillick, Craig Lynch and Brian Gregan just missed out on a spot in Rio.

They set a time of 3:04.32 but that was barely outside the necessary qualifying time to make it into the Top 16. Indeed, they only miss out by 0.07 seconds.

Although, a place in the Olympics is not definitively ruled out with a possible slot available if Japan do not declare a relay team, it now appears unlikely.

"We gave it our best shot but it wasn't enough to get that qualifying spot for Rio," Barr admitted after the race, while Lynch said fifth in Europe was an "excellent result" in context.
